The End
By 1969, cracks were visible. In Australia for Mick’s film “Ned Kelly,” Faithfull overdosed and fell into a coma, an incident that deepened existing fractures. Recovery was uneven, the spotlight unrelenting, and the relationship faltered under the weight of addiction, scrutiny, and conflicting trajectories. They split in 1970.

Afterward, lore grew around which songs were about whom. “Wild Horses,” often linked to that painful period, likely drew on multiple sources; even band members differ on specifics. What’s clear is that their affair left a lasting emotional imprint on both artists—and on the Stones’ music.
