#9: First Day of Work
If you ever thought your first day at work or school was bad, just listen to this story. This former medical school student had a pretty memorable first day working their ER rotation. During their very first shift, a guy came in with an axe lodged in his chest. No big deal. Apparently, the guy was chopping wood when the axe bounced back and hit him in the chest.

Thankfully, the axe wasn’t too deep, but it was definitely stuck in the guy’s sternum. Talk about a memorable first day! Honestly, trial by fire can be good in these situations. Our storyteller lived to tell this tale and learned that they were able to deal with extremely graphic and stressful medical situations. Practicing medicine isn’t for everyone. It’s best to find out if you can handle it sooner rather than later.
