#35: Paid in Purple
Working at Hot Topic at 16 was less about making money and more about feeding the aesthetic. Three hours a week and a 20% discount meant every paycheck went right back into striped shirts, fingerless gloves, and statement shorts. The result? A look that was equal parts awkward and iconic.

The purple overload, the pose in the chair, the smoldering stare—it’s peak mall-goth-meets-scene-kid energy. Awkward in hindsight, yes, but also a perfect time capsule of teenage self-expression. At the time, it felt like rebellion. Now, it’s comedy gold with a side of nostalgia.
