Extinct Car Features Only Boomers Remember

Getting in and out of a car wasn’t always easy, especially for those with limited mobility. So in the 1970s, some automakers—especially GM—introduced swivel seats in select models. With the pull of a lever, the front seats rotated outward toward the door, making entry and exit smoother and surprisingly futuristic.

It felt like a car was greeting you. Though clever, the feature didn’t last long. Safety regulations, weight concerns, and production costs led to its decline. But for a short time, swiveling into the driver’s seat felt more like boarding a spaceship than climbing into a sedan.
